Calling All Volunteers!

We're always very happy to have volunteers who have a heart for service here at Knox. Here are a couple of ministries to keep in mind if you're considering volunteering:

  • Knox Sunday School is searching for new volunteers for the nursery, preschool, and school age classrooms. We are looking for volunteers for the summer months and for the coming school year. If you are interested, please speak to either Alvin Kim (alvin@knoxtoronto.org) or Jenni Mabee (jenni@knoxtoronto.org).
  • International Ministries Knox ESL classes and ESL Bible studies are helpful ways to get to know and build relationships with our dear international friends. Through these relationships built on Monday nights and during other times of fellowship, those who serve in Knox International Ministries have opportunity to be living witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are looking for teachers for Fall 2010! In particular, ESL teachers for English classes: beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. If you know Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour, and are looking to serve to build His Kingdom, please consider if serving within the international community, here at Knox, could be the right fit for you! Contact Dominique Goold, Director of International Ministries today (416.921.8993 ext 240) or email dom@knoxtoronto.org for an interview.

Knox World Missions Spotlight - Bill and Sheila McKelvie, Pakistan

The McKelvie FamilyAbout Bill and Sheila - Bill is a physician working in various medical ministries with the Diocese of Hyderabad, Church of Pakistan, since 1988. In 1995, he started at tuberculosis (TB) control program which now operates six centres.

Bill writes, “There has been a cure for TB for more than 50 years. Yet, every year, 1.5 million people die of this disease. Millions more are disabled and impoverished. The cure is there, but it requires more than just handing out drugs. It requires getting close to people and finding out what their needs are.”

Like those with leprosy, TB patients often feel ashamed of having the disease. For many, it is problematic to take their medication or to complete their treatment once it has begun. The challenge for the TB program is to ensure that these patients complete their treatment. Since the program began, cure rates have risen to almost 90%.

In 2008, the program changed its name to Sahara Community Health Association (SaCHA) and expanded its ministry to include other projects: HIV/AIDS education to high risk groups, a traditional birth attendant training program was started and tentatively a childhood nutrition program. The program also went under national staff leadership which Bill developed during his tenure. He will continue to encourage national leadership in SaCHA and develop new medical ministries for SaCHA and other Christian groups.

Sheila is coordinator for Interserve's International orientation program (E2S). She administers this program and participants in the training as well. The programs are held 3 times a year somewhere in Asia and/or the Arab World. When at home in Pakistan Sheila is involved with ladies and children's ministries in the church as will as caring for the many visitors that come through their home.

Bill and Sheila have three children. Daniel (1986) who is married to Amanda, Rebecca (1990) and Mark (1990).

Latest News - Pray for Mark traveling to Pakistan from May 29 - June 29. For safety and protection as he travels to Karachi, Murree and 'home' to MirpurKhas.

Pray for Diocese of Hyderabad for whom Bill and I work while in Pakistan. The present Bishop is completing his final year of service. Pray that he would seek to build up and encourage projects in his diocese rather than control and interfere in the work that is being done. Pray for the elections and run up to choosing a new bishop. Pray for encouragement and wisdom for project leaders, including Dr. Ebenezer.

On the family front: Daniel is looking for a job. Rebecca is moving to Brock in September and needs to find suitable accommodation.

From Ashley Davis, Camp Director

I, Ashley, am SO excited to be the Camp Director this summer. The first exciting thing I was tasked with doing was to find two new program directors for this summer, and, trust me, this is REALLY EXCITING news!

Introducing…. KEN NAKANISHI and GRACE KENNEDY !!!!

Ken and Grace

Ken and Grace are both incredibly gifted veteran Knox Camp-ers, and everyone is SO happy to have them both in these roles this summer. You should be excited too, because they have some INCREDIBLE and SUPER-FUN ideas up their respective sleeves. I’ll let them introduce themselves in their own blogs, which are coming SOON.
