Winter Sermon Series: The Miracles of Jesus
The miraculous is an important belief for Christians.
The ministry of Jesus is one where the impossible happens: the blind see, water turns to wine, the dead are raised, the best is saved for last, where even foreigners are made well, and somehow all are fed, all are provided for, all are seen and known and welcomed and loved. But what do we make of it all as modern, scientific people? Should we do what U.S. President Thomas Jefferson did and take our scissors and cut out the miracle stories from our Bibles leaving us with just Jesus’ ethical teachings? Or does that leave us with a God who is too small?
We believe the biblical accounts that miracles happened, but do you believe eyewitness reports that miracles still happen? Between shady faith healers, weeping madonnas, and gimmicks like holy land water, it’s difficult— maybe even foolish— to believe every miracle account we hear. So how do we discount the fakes without missing out on the real miracles in the process?
We want to be a church that believes in the miracle-working power of God—in our lives, by our prayers, that God's kingdom might come. As we revisit the miracles of Jesus we look to learn what these miracles reveal about the God we worship. And we will ask questions like: Are these believable or credible? Can such things still happen today? Ignore them? Pray for them?
Join us as we explore further: how active is God in the world today and how should miracles figure in our faith and lives today?
