Eastertide Sermon Series: The Foolishness of God

“For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.” – 1 Corinthians 1:25

Can you fathom the mind of God? Why does God act in some places and seems to not act in others, or what is actually the point of all our work and of our lives? It all seems perplexing, unimaginable, or in the words of the teacher, perhaps even meaningless.

God is at work in the world… but not the way we expected, not the way we’d do it, maybe not even the way that seems like obviously the best option. God’s work often seems like foolishness. Martin Luther once wrote: “God is the sort of person who likes to do what is foolish and useless in the eyes of the world.” Sometimes it is in the foolishness and the uselessness that the wonder of God can most clearly be seen.

The teacher in Ecclesiastes applies his mind to study and explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens and he shares what he sees, what he feels, what he comes to believe with us: that in observing our world we might better understand ourselves and better follow the God who has made good times as well as bad and will bring every deed into judgment.

Over the next six weeks, we will learn from this teacher, bringing the meaninglessness and foolishness of our world to the foot of the cross that the foolishness of God might become light to our paths and the hope of our lives.
