The Elder Role at Knox

Elders at Knox have three primary responsibilities

  1. Spiritual oversight, visionary leadership, and governance
Elders are called to shepherd the church by providing guidance to discern God’s direction for Knox, determine the vision, core values, and major goals/outcomes, develop policies to guide the church toward vitality and constantly monitor the health of the church and its progress towards achieving its vision and goals. The entire process of spiritual oversight and governance is rooted in constant prayer for Knox.

  2. Discipling the congregation (Shepherd of the people)
This is the hat an elder wears most of the time, carrying responsibility for the overall care and discipleship of the congregation, ensuring people are growing as disciples of Jesus. Biblically, much of the care is meant to be provided by the entire congregation as every member cares for one another. A variety of ministry initiatives exist from year to year that support discipleship including Home Churches and serving teams.

  3. Ministry team leadership/liaison
Along with staff and volunteers, Elders provide leadership ministry areas that are critical to the mission of Knox. Elders may serve on ministry teams, as needed, providing timely information to staff and volunteers or Session on ministry matters, encouraging and praying for staff and volunteers, and monitoring the health of key ministry areas.
